General information about the Salzgitter campus

The site of the Salzgitter campus has got a history that reaches back to the beginning of the 20th century. It used to be an ore mine which was in operation until 1967, the main complex with the administrative facilities until 1976. Afterwards it lay fallow and was threatened by dilapidation. The site was chosen because it offers perfect possibilities to establish a campus that houses several hundred students, offices, classrooms and lecture halls, a cafeteria and also room enough to expand. It is set in the picturesque natural surroundings of rolling hills and meadows, the Harz mountains rising in the distance.

At the beginning of the 90s transport became more and more important to economy and industry. The idea of a career based on traffic and transport was born. Salzgitter is home of several important industries and factories. This vicinity promises an intensive collaboration in terms of internships, projects and later employment opportunities. The town of Salzgitter started construction works on the campus site in 1992 and in March 1994 Salzgitter’s first students took up their studies in Transport and Traffic Management/ Technology.

Soon the offer of study programmes was extended. In September 1996 Tourism Management was introduced, to be followed by Sport Management and the extension studies of Environment & Quality Management and Multimedia in 1998 and the course of Mediadesign in 2000. As far as the extension studies are concerned it is possible to gain an internationally approved degree like a M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration) and a M.Sc. (Master of Science).

Due to the increasing number of students, more space was needed. In summer of 1999 another extraordinarily wellequipped new building of the Salzgitter campus, which houses a library, offices, seminar facilities and a large lecture hall, opened its doors. During the winter semester of 2000/ 2001 there was a total of 754 students in Salzgitter.

The faculty of Salzgitter also accommodates a Centre of Logistics and Expert Systems (CLE) to collaborate intensely in applied research and development.

The student housing situation is considered to be excellent as well. In addition to the new student residence hall, which was built in 1994, there is, in the vicinity of the university, a wide selection of comfortable apartments and private rooms available for students at a reasonable price.
