The international collaborative research project “Empowering urban regions for cooperative, synergistic and practical implementation of sustainability and resilience strategies considering the urban-rural nexus (emplement!)” will have the next phase of the project funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. Of the approximate total of €800,000, around €130,000 of the funding will come to the Ostfalia. Ostfalia Professor Artur Mennerich, from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering is working on the joint project alongside a number of universities and partners from Germany and Vietnam. He is responsible for the subproject “Water and basic sanitation services”. Following an initial preparatory phase, the project partners are now in the definition phase, which is due to last until late 2020.

Worldwide, more and more people are living in cities – a trend that will continue in the coming decades, and which will pose major challenges for infrastructure in urban areas. In Vietnam, where the project “emplement!” is being executed, urbanisation is progressing very quickly, and with it the need to solve the sustainability problems arising, and to improve resilience. “Resilience” in this context means being able to adapt to new, changing conditions, whilst continuing to function. Often, the complex network of facilities, infrastructure, information and resources within cities cannot keep pace with growing urbanisation and the changing requirements. As a result, risks arise for people and the environment; for example, when the infrastructure for water and energy supplies and for waste disposal are overextended. Which is where this project comes in. The aim is to develop and apply transferable instruments and methods for the authorities and other players in the Vietnamese city of Da Nang and the neighbouring province of Quang Nam. It should enable urban regions to transfer and implement their strategies and visions into concrete, practical, efficient, sustainable measures.

In the project, the Ostfalia Universitycooperates with AT-Verband – Verband zur Förderung angepasster, sozial und umweltverträglicher Technologien e.V., [an association that stands for an advanced socially and environmentally sound technology practice], IZES gGmbH – Institut für ZukunftsEnergieSysteme, the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, the universities of Tübingen und Hohenheim, and with UN-Habitat. On the Vietnamese side, the Da Nang University of Architecture, the University of Da Nang and the Quang Nam University are also involved in the project. Following the definition phase, a four-year research is to commence in 2021.
