New podcast: Automation in rail transport – will trains still need drivers in the near future?

In the podcast “Einfach Forschung”, Prof. Quack and Prof. Brey discuss ETCS, automation and remote control – and the question of where this leaves people.

Trains have long since ceased to operate solely on the basis of signals and national signalling systems. With ETCS, digital train control and new forms of automation, the way we organise and control rail transport is changing. Our guest, Prof. Marco Brey, is familiar with this development from various perspectives: as a former employee at the international rail vehicle manufacturer Alstom and now as a professor of track-guided transport systems. We discuss his experiences in the industry, Deutsche Bahn’s ETCS system, and what it means for the future as trains become increasingly automated or even controlled and monitored remotely.

In this episode, we’ll be exploring the following questions together: How much technology is already incorporated into a modern train? What can be automated? And where do humans remain indispensable?
