During the studies

On the following pages you can find some helpful information concerning your studies.

On the one hand you'll find advice how to finance your studies, on the other hand we give you tips regarding student life outside every day life in the university.

Financing

BAföG

Many students receive private financial support (often from their parents). If this isn't sufficient, please inform yourself early with the "Studentenwerk" if you are eligible for BAföG, an interest-free loan for students from the state.

It's mostly applicable to German students, but not exclusively.

Part-time job

A further possibility to earn money is a part-time job for students. Please note: If you are not a citizen of the EU, please read the following information

The Career-Service of the Ostfalia can help you to find a part-time job for students. You can contact them also if you are looking for an internship or a job after you finished your degree.

Scholarships

There are numerous scholarships available. A prerequisite is usualy a very good perfomance at the university. An overview can be found in the database of the DAAD.

Heinrich-Böll-Foundation (inter allia for refugees)

For a funding the foundation expects the scholarship recipients to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged, and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice.

Otto-Benecke-Foundation (inter allia for refugees)

The programme is directed to young migrants, who wish to gain their qualification for admission to higher education in Germany or prepare for university studies and who live in Germany as refugees, jewish immigrants or late repatriates (or their immediate family). The aim of the scholarship is the immediate social integration, in particular the continuation of their interrupted education in their home countries.

Deutschlandstipendium

Outstanding performance in school (for first semesters) or university as well as social commitment are essential for the scholarship. Difficult study situations are also taken into consideration.

Scholarships for stays abroad

For study stays abroad (1–2 semesters) in Europe there is the programme ERASMUS of the EU. Further information can be found on the website of the International Student Office.

For study stays outside Europe the DAAD awards so called PROMOS scholarships. The International Student Office informs as well.

Individual faculties of the Ostfalia award the " Aufenthaltsstipendium" for a stay abroad within a university cooperation worldwide.
It can be granted with an amount up to 700 €/month.

Loan for Ostfalia students:

Erich-Zillmer-Stiftung

The foundation supports students of the Ostfalia University. It awards repayable interest-free loans. They are generally granted in the final phase of the studies and shall not exceed one semester.

The monthly amount depends on the financial situation of the student and is aligned to the maximum rate of the BAföG.

Student Life

Discover Niedersachsen and Bremen

‘Discover! Lower Saxony and Bremen’ is an initiative of several universities from these states. In alternation universities of these two federal states offer free time activities for international students to experience the different regions in Lower Saxony and Bremen.

With the semester ticket you don't have to pay to reach most of the event venues.

You can apply for the events online or with the International Student Office.

Gauß Friends

The Gauß Friends is an international team of students, that meets regularly in the so called "Gauß House" in Braunschweig. They are looking forward to welcoming new international students!

The Gauß Friends provide a diverse programme. In addition to the weekly theme nights and workshops in the Gauß House different excursions are offered throughout the semester.

Ostfalia International Friends

On facebook there is a group called "Ostfalia International Friends" that connects international students of the Ostfalia University. The group organises joint activities with the Gauß Friends.
