Erasmus+ Programme
Information on individual student mobility KA 131 in the Erasmus+ programme
The Erasmus+ programme supports the objectives of the European Education Agendas, promotes the modernization, internationalization and qualitative improvement of the higher education sector in Europe, increases the attractiveness of the EU as a study and research location, and contributes to the sustainable development of higher education in third countries. Furthermore, it especially strengthens students’ international skills, personal development, and employability.
An overview of the general programme objectives until 2027 can be found in the following fact sheet (external link, opens in a new window)
Ostfalia University applied to participate in the new programme generation in the field of higher education and was successful for Key Action 1, Mobility of Individuals (including students, teaching staff and university personnel). On February 27, 2021, the European Commission awarded the Erasmus Charter 2021-2027 (external link, opens in a new window) (English version) to Ostfalia University, whose principles is committed to upholding. Here is the charter in German (external link, opens in a new window).

Application procedure
Your faculty decides who will be sent to an Erasmus partner university. You usually apply for one semester. An extension for an additional semester is possible with the approval of your faculty. The placement and all related matters are governed by a contract. You can only choose an Erasmus partner university of your faculty. If you wish to attend a different European university, this is only possible as a Free Mover outside the Erasmus program.
- Application deadline: You apply to your faculty for an Erasmus spot. Please refer to your faculty’s website for details. The faculty’s exchange coordinator will nominate you at the ISO. You will then receive all relevant information about the further procedure from the ISO. You register for studying abroad in our database. We will nominate you to the partner university.
- Application deadline: Afterwards, the partner university will contact you and you must apply there, i.e., submit documents. The deadline for this varies from university to university.
A language certificate, which you can obtain from the language center, is required. A so-called transcript, your ECTS record of achievement, is required. A Learning Agreement, an agreement about the courses and credits you wish to take and acquire abroad, is also required. More detailed information will be provided as soon as you have been nominated by your faculty at the ISO.
If you are unable to start your Erasmus semester, you are required to notify the ISO. Even if you are already abroad, you must inform us if you withdraw.
Our Erasmus Partner Universities
The basis for Erasmus+ university cooperation is contractual arrangements (“bilateral agreements”) between two European universities. These bilateral agreements define the degree program that can be studied at the partner university, as well as the number of students and the duration of the stay abroad. A stay abroad comprises a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 months within one study cycle. Both partner universities have Erasmus+ program coordinators who provide academic support and, if necessary, coordinate the exchanges.
Mobility grants
Mobility Grants
The financial support for Erasmus+ stays for students is based on the different living costs in the destination countries (“programme countries”).
Across Europe, there are three country groups for study visits. In the 2024 call, these are:
- Group 1 (monthly grant rate: €600): Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden.
- Group 2 (monthly grant rate: €540): Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Cyprus.
- Group 3 (monthly grant rate: also €540): Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary.
- International mobility with Switzerland and the United Kingdom: These are treated like Group 1, i.e., the grant rate is €600 per month.
- Our goal is to provide all students with a grant for a planned Erasmus+ study stay for a period of 3 months. The exact amount of the Erasmus+ mobility grant will be specified in the Grant Agreement, which we will send to you before the start of your stay.
If your period of stay abroad, according to the confirmation provided by your host university (Letter of Confirmation), is less than 2 months, you must pay back your mobility grant.
Mobility Grant for Students with Fewer Opportunities
In the Erasmus Generation until 2027, the EU Commission places a strong focus on social inclusion. This means that students who, due to their personal situation and life circumstances, consider it problematic to take part in an Erasmus stay abroad are encouraged to consider and ideally carry out a stay abroad. This group includes students whose parents are not academics, students who have a child, those with chronic illnesses or disabilities, as well as working students (dual studies or part-time work). They receive a monthly top-up of €250 for the duration of the funding.
Sustainable Travel
We encourage mobile students at Ostfalia to consider what contribution they can make to environmentally conscious behavior.
Duration of funding
The following regulation applies: Within each study cycle (Bachelor, Master, or PhD), students can spend a total of 12 months abroad through the Erasmus+ program for studying and/or internships. Up to the maximum number of twelve funded months, students can undertake several periods of study and/or internships per study cycle. For each (renewed) funding, the minimum duration is two months for both internships and periods of study.
- Students can receive funding multiple times in each study cycle (Bachelor, Master, Doctorate).
- Up to twelve months of funding are available per study cycle.
- Study visits can be funded as of two months during the study cycle.
- Internships can be funded as of two months both during and after completion of the study cycle.
Please note that you are responsible for keeping track of your Erasmus+ quota, as the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) requires, before each planned Erasmus+ stay, information about whether you have already stayed abroad through the Erasmus+ program and how many months your stay abroad lasted within your current study phase (according to the confirmation of stay from your host university or the internship certificate from your company). Zero Grant stays (i.e., Erasmus+ stays abroad without financial support, or periods without financial support during an Erasmus+ stay with partial funding) must also be included in this calculation.
Benefits of the Erasmus+ Programme
- Multiple funding of Erasmus+ stays (study and/or internship) is possible:

Health insurance abroad
National health insurance generally provides basic coverage for stays in another EU country through the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). However, coverage through the EHIC or a private insurance policy may be insufficient, especially if repatriation or special medical procedures are necessary. For more information, please contact your health insurance provider.
Important information about the European Health Insurance Card:
- It is not a substitute for travel insurance. It does not cover private healthcare services or other costs that may arise (e.g., return flights to your home country, replacement of lost or stolen property).
- It does not cover your costs if you are traveling specifically for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment.
- It does not guarantee free treatment. Healthcare systems in each country differ, so services that are free of charge at home may involve costs in other countries.
It is therefore advisable to take out additional private health insurance.
Erasmus+ students have the option of participating in the DAAD group insurance at their own expense. Health, accident, and liability insurance are included. For further information, please contact the DAAD Insurance Office by phone at +49 228 882-294 or via the the following DAAD link (external link, opens in a new window).
Internship with the Erasmus+ programme
Prerequisites:
- Regular enrollment at a German university.
- Full-time internships between 2 and 12 months are eligible for funding, provided they are closely related to your studies and carried out in one of the countries participating in the ERASMUS+ program.
- Internships at European institutions or organizations, national diplomatic missions, or organizations that manage EU programs are not eligible for funding.
- If you wish to do a graduate internship, you must apply while you are still enrolled at the university.
- A graduate internship can be funded if it is carried out and completed within one year (12 months) after graduation. Proof can be provided by a certificate from the university confirming that all coursework has been completed or evidence of your de-registration before the start of your internship. Before starting your internship, the de-registration certificate or the graduation certificate must be available.
- The duration of the graduate internship is counted towards the maximum of twelve months per study cycle: For example, if you have already completed a study stay of eight months during your Bachelor’s, you have four months of funding left for a graduate internship.
