Our mission statement

The Language Centre

Self-conception and vision

Our mission statement has been developed in line with the Ostfalia mission statement and includes all permanent staff, lecturers and students at the Language Centre. We regularly review and discuss our values, policies, goals and future expectations in order to make appropriate decisions and take appropriate action.

Our life is multilingual and networked

We are Ostfalia University's centre of excellence for foreign language learning. It is therefore our goal to train linguistically competent, interculturally sensitised and cosmopolitan students. In addition to students, our target group also includes university staff. In this sense, we would like to make a contribution to the internationalisation of studies and staff.

Our primary goal is to promote multilingualism and intercultural competence among all members of the university.

Languages broaden horizons

Our language training is based on scientific findings from linguistic teaching and learning research and foreign language didactics. Our methodological approach to language teaching is action-orientated and subject-related. From the very beginning, foreign language learners should be enabled to orientate themselves linguistically and interculturally in other societies.

Academic language training is characterised by international standards such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Our extensive range of compulsory and elective courses covers various levels. In recent years, we have expanded our foreign language programme in the online area in order to make our language courses more accessible to students at the four Ostfalia locations

New methodological approaches in foreign language education are the subject of constant reflection, as are the changing needs of foreign language learners and our response to new social and technical developments.

Foreign languages open doors

Action-orientation and autonomy are the core values of our foreign language training. On the one hand, teachers ensure that the foreign language is taught in line with academic requirements, but on the other hand they also encourage learners' personal responsibility and autonomy. Whether in preparation for an internship abroad, studying abroad or everyday working life, students should acquire the necessary skills and strategies for multilingual and intercultural situations.
