Fees

Detailed information can be found in the Lower Saxony Fee Schedule for Academic Libraries (external link, opens in a new window). You can pay your fees in cash on site. EC cards are also accepted. On request, we will send you the account details for a bank transfer.

Guided tours

We offer guided tours of the library for members of the university and other interest groups of up to 20 people during and outside opening hours. Please arrange the time and content of the tour with our staff in advance. The duration of the guided tours may vary depending on the content and format.

Please understand that our media and personnel resources are not unlimited. Only long-term, joint planning can ensure the high quality of our offers and an appointment at the desired time. Therefore, the earlier the better: please contact the relevant site manager at least four weeks in advance to arrange a tour format that suits you.

Interlibrary loan

Tell us the literature you require and we will order books and copies of articles for you. Costs per order: 1.50 EUR (articles up to 20 pages, each additional page: 0.10 EUR). Interlibrary loan fees can only be paid in cash on site. You can order on site in the libraries or by e-mail.

Internship

If you are doing an internship abroad or far away from the university, you can apply for extended loan periods.

Master's thesis

The Ostfalia Library grants you longer loan periods for your Master's thesis. Further information can be found in the information sheet (PDF, 45.61 KB) (opens in a new window), (not accessible). Submit a copy or scan of your completed application for admission to the Master's thesis to the library. The start of the processing period and the submission date of the thesis should be stated.

New acquisitions

You can find new acquisitions of the library sorted by subject in the library catalogue. Search requests can also be subscribed to via RSS feed. You are welcome to send suggestions for acquisitions by email to the library or via the acquisition suggestion form (external link, opens in a new window).

OPUS

On the Ostfalia publication server - OPUS (external link, opens in a new window) - you will find student theses as well as publications by researchers and employees of the university.

Opening hours

The opening hours of the Ostfalia libraries at each location vary. When the libraries are closed, at least one book return box is available at each location for returning borrowed media.

Ordering media from another location

Media can be sent free of charge from one Ostfalia library location to another university location for collection. Please let us know the call number of the desired book, your user details and the location of the collection.

Password for external users

You will find the library number above the barcode on your library card. The preset password for your library account will be given to you when you log in.

Printing/copying

With the Copyy Print System (CPS), you can print out your print jobs or make copies on multifunctional systems (copiers/printers) at any location of the university. The multifunctional systems are integrated into the university network and can be used from any workstation. All publicly accessible devices are equipped with an Ostfalia Card reader and are used with the Ostfalia Card according to the "Follow-Me-Printing" principle. This means that you can send a print job to the server from any workstation in the university network. You decide when and where you want to print the job. All you need for authentication is your Ostfalia Card. Instructions for using the CPS are available in the RZWiki (external link, opens in a new window).

Reference collections for professors and staff

Reference books are books that are available to professors and staff for their academic work and preparation for teaching activities at their own workplace and are financed directly from the funds of the respective organisational unit.

Printed reference books must be ordered via the library - the corresponding ordering process can be found in the Ostfalia Central Information System (external link, opens in a new window) (Access only for Ostfalia employees after registration on the XWiki).

Reference lending

Reference books can be borrowed overnight or over the weekend.

Registration

Borrowing is only possible with a library card. University members are admitted to the library with the issue of the Ostfalia Card.


External users can obtain their user card in the library by paying a fee in cash or by EC-card and presenting valid identification documents.

Reminders

The reminder fees are 2 euros for the first, 5 euros for the second and 10 euros for the third reminder (the amounts add up). There is a one-week grace period, but this does not apply to reserved media. You can pay your fees in cash on site or by EC-card. After consultation with the library, overdue fines can be transferred. Payment by Ostfalia Card is not possible. EC cards are accepted.

Replacement of media

We want you to be able to borrow books that are in order and in perfect condition. Therefore, please check the books for damage, soiling and text markings before borrowing them. If necessary, have a note entered in the book at the lending desk. We assume that you have borrowed the books in perfect condition. If we discover any damage, soiling or text markings on return, you are liable to pay compensation (based on section 2.6 of the current user regulations (PDF, 332.36 KB) (opens in a new window), (not accessible)). If you lose an item, please contact the library staff for a replacement.

Reservations

You can reserve borrowed books yourself online in the library catalogue (external link, opens in a new window) or at the circulation desk. Please send us a short message if you wish to reserve books that you would like to collect from a location other than the "home location of the book". Once the reserved media have been received, a notification will appear in your user account. We will also send you an e-mail to the e-mail address you have provided.

Returning media

You can return media to any library location. You do not need a library card to return items. A book return box is available outside opening hours. It is also possible to return items by post, although you bear the risk of liability in the event of loss.

Scanners

In addition to the book scanners, flatbed scanners are also available at Wolfenbüttel, Salzgitter and Suderburg.

Search

You can search for printed media, electronic journals and e-books in the library catalogue (external link, opens in a new window). Media that are not listed in the library catalogue can be ordered from other libraries → Interlibrary lending.

Self-checkout machines

Media can be borrowed both at the circulation desk and using the self-checkout machine. Items can only be returned at the circulation desk.

Short lending period

The lending period for books labelled "Kurzausleihe" is one week. Short loans can be renewed online up to 7 times as long as they have not been reserved.

Signature

The signature identifies the location of the item and is a combination of letters and numbers. You will need the call number to borrow items on site, to order items from other locations or if you have any questions for the library staff.

If you would like to use the Nautos standards portal from home, you will need the VPN client. Acquisition suggestion

If you need a book that is not available in the university library, you can submit an acquisition proposal. This will then be checked by us and processed as quickly as possible. → Acquisition form (external link, opens in a new window)

Bachelor thesis

The Ostfalia Library grants you longer loan periods for your bachelor thesis. Further information can be found in the information sheet (PDF, 45.61 KB) (opens in a new window), (not accessible). Submit a copy or scan of your completed application for admission to the Bachelor's thesis to the library. The start of the processing period and the submission date of the thesis should be stated.

Book catalogue

The majority of the library's stock can be taken from the shelves themselves. The media are organised by subject group. Within the subject groups, the holdings are organised systematically, starting with the general introductions of the respective subject area.

Book replacement / book loss

We want you to be able to borrow books that are in good order and in perfect condition. Therefore, please check the books for damage, soiling and text markings before borrowing them. If necessary, have a note entered in the book at the lending desk. We assume that you have borrowed the books in perfect condition. If we discover any damage, soiling or text markings on return, you are liable to pay compensation (based on section 2.6 of the current user regulations). Book scanners

There are book scanners at Wolfenbüttel, Salzgitter and Suderburg which can be used free of charge. The overhead scanner digitises documents up to A3 size in either black and white, greyscale or colour. The scanned documents can be saved on the USB stick brought along as PDF, TIFF or JPG files.

Citavi

The Citavi reference management programme is provided free of charge by the Data Center (external link, opens in a new window) as part of a campus licence.

Copying / Printing

You can copy and print at all locations. You will need the appropriate credit on your Ostfalia card. External users should contact the circulation desks. The library has acquired licences for databases that correspond to the university's range of subjects. The databases are listed and described in the Database Information System DBIS.

E-books

All e-books licensed by the library are listed in the Ostfalia online catalogue (external link, opens in a new window) and can be accessed as an overview via a pre-formulated search query (external link, opens in a new window). Licensed e-books are only accessible in full text from the university network!

Electronic journals

The electronic journals are listed and described in the Electronic Journals Library EZB (external link, opens in a new window).

E-mail notification

You will receive an e-mail to your (Ostfalia) e-mail address three days before the end of the loan period, when reservations and interlibrary loans have arrived, as well as when you place a reservation on your borrowed media.

Since 2018, email forwarding to external servers has been deactivated for student accounts. Email notifications from the library such as expiring loan periods, notifications about media that have arrived, reservations for borrowed media and reminders are therefore only sent to Ostfalia email addresses.

The centre offers a wide range of material on the EU, as well as links to important databases and sources of information. → EDZ

Extension of the lending period

Media can be renewed up to 7 times online in your library account as long as they are not reserved and no fees are outstanding. Please check carefully after each renewal whether and for which items the lending period has actually been extended! If you need media beyond this, you must present them at the library for a new loan.

Lending periods

The lending period is normally four weeks, one week for books with the yellow “Short loan” sticker. Books with a red “Presence” sticker can be borrowed overnight or over the weekend. Media can be renewed online up to 7 times as long as they are not reserved and no fees are outstanding.
