VPN - What is it and how do I use it?

The library has licenced many databases, e-books and e-journals that are only available on the university network.

If you would like to use databases, e-books and e-journals from home, you will need the Virtual Private Network (VPN) software. Information on installing the VPN software can be found in the Computing Centre Wiki (external link, opens in a new window).

Attention! Non-university members can only access licenced services at the stationary PC workstations within the library after prior registration!

Utilisation of e-resources

On-site use is possible in the following ways:

  • At the library's internet workstations (for all registered users)
  • In the entire university network (pool rooms, labs, workstations, etc.)
  • With your own notebooks if you use the university's WLAN (eduroam)

Help with access problems to the electronic services

  • Always start the VPN first, then start the search. Otherwise, many database providers will save in your browser history that you do not have access authorisation.
  • Please allow cookies. Instructions on how to accept cookies can be found in the Data Centre Wiki.
  • If you have access problems, please delete the browser history (especially cookies).
  • If several databases are not accessible, please check the VPN connection: see the computer centre's instructions.
  • You can also try to access the database via another browser that you have not yet used to search the database.
  • If you are unable to access an individual electronic resource, there may be a fault with the provider. In this case, please send an e-mail to bibliothek-edv(at)ostfalia.de.
