First semester information

Welcome!

You have decided to study at the Faculty of Law - Brunswick European Law School (BELS) for winter semester 2025/2026 and have been admitted. As the Admissions Coordinator, I would like to congratulate you on behalf of the entire faculty and look forward to seeing you on campus soon!

The Faculty of Law - Brunswick European Law School (BELS) invites all new students of the Bachelor's degree programmes to the welcome event for first-semester students on 15 and 16 September 2026. A separate invitation will be sent to you by e-mail in good time.

Please reserve this two-day event as an important date in your calendar.

On 15 September 2026, we will meet at 08:00 a.m. at the main entrance to the Faculty of Law (Building R). The event will finish at around 16:00.

On 16 September 2026, we will meet at 08:00 a.m. at the Exer, at the entrance to Building 1 (immediately after entering the campus). The event will finish at around 16:00.

For all new students on Master’s programmes, the in-person welcome event will take place on 17 September 2026 from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm.

You will be welcomed by your learning coach Anja Freiwald, your first-year coordinator Oliver Kahl and the Ostfalia writing workshop.

In short presentations, you will receive essential information for a good and successful start to your studies at Ostfalia, for example

• Where can I find my timetable and what else do I need to bear in mind?
• How do I register for courses and receive the lecture notes?
• How does on-campus study at Ostfalia work and what online tools are available?
• How do I access the Ostfalia university network with my laptop?
• Which additional courses at Ostfalia should I definitely take?
• Who is my contact person for what in the Dean's Office?
• Who do I contact with which questions?
• Presentation of the writing workshop and its compulsory programme in the first semester.
• Presentation of the university's most important facilities for students.

You will have the opportunity to make initial contacts with your fellow students. You will also be able to talk to students from higher semesters, who will certainly be able to give you lots more tips for a successful start to your studies.

First semester welcome by the Presidential Board

On Monday, 21 September 2026, from 10:00 a.m., the Presidential Board will welcome the first semester students in the auditorium.

If you have not yet received an Ostfalia account from our Computer Centre due to late enrolment, please get in touch with your incoming student coordinator Oliver Kahl (opens your email program), who will provide you with the most important information. A separate appointment will then be organised for students enrolled late to complete the writing check.

Test your knowledge of German as a scientific language with the Schreibwerkstatt's "Schreibcheck" self-assessment test.

Writing check I

At the beginning of the semester, the "Schreibcheck" of the Faculty of Law via the Ostfalia Schreibwerkstatt is mandatory for all 1st semester Bachelor's students. There will be a short introduction at the beginning.

Date: 04 November 2025 at 10:00 a.m. (online; room P4 available,  if there is no stable internet connection at home)

In this 30-minute guided test, you will complete online tasks and questions relating to academic reading and writing. With the direct and detailed feedback, you can find out in which areas your existing skills match the requirements of academic literacy and which courses you may need to take in the first semester.

Please check your timetable regularly, as changes and cancellations may occur at short notice.

Mondays and Fridays as well as during the examination period and the lecture-free period by appointment only.

• All incoming emails are either answered directly or forwarded to the relevant person(s) in the Dean's Office for a decision. All administrative staff can be reached via the e-mail address given, so that the e-mail does not need to be copied to anyone.
• The request should be precisely formulated in the subject line (e.g. registration for Bachelor's thesis, grade booking, examination schedule, etc.).
• The processing time can be approx. 2 - 4 weeks. Applications should therefore be submitted in good time.
• Important: For data protection reasons, only requests sent from Ostfalia e-mail addresses will be processed.
