Specialist for dementia-sensitive patient care
There are currently over one million people living with dementia in Germany. Caring for and looking after these people is a particular challenge for carers. In order to meet this challenge and develop an understanding of the needs and subjective experience of people with dementia, carers not only need a high degree of patience and empathy, but above all dementia-specific skills.

Together, we develop ways - based on an appreciative attitude at eye level - of ensuring dignified care and maintaining and improving the quality of life and self-determination of dementia patients through person-centred interaction and communication, even in challenging situations.
The training programme consists of two modules that can also be booked individually. Successful participation in both modules and the final examination leads to the acquisition of a university certificate as a specialist in dementia-sensitive patient care.

Participation requirements
All interested specialists and managers in the healthcare sector. A university entrance qualification is not a prerequisite for participation.

Contents Module 1: Expert standard ( Inhalte) The German Network for Quality Development in Care has defined important evidence-based concepts with the expert standard "Relationship Management in the Care of People with Dementia". Relationships are among the key factors that constitute and influence quality of life from the perspective of people with dementia. In this further training module, the basics of the clinical pictures of dementia and the associated symptoms in the various stages and the effects on identity and everyday competence are scrutinised.
The module focuses on the following topics
- The clinical picture of dementia
- Expert standard
- Validation
- Shaping relationships with people with dementia
- Person-centred approach
- Dealing with challenging situations
Communication in dementia-sensitive patient care ( Inhalte) In this training module, you will gain comprehensive knowledge of communication techniques and practical methods for conflict resolution. You will learn how to defuse problematic situations through targeted communication at eye level. This will support teamwork and focus on multi-professional cooperation in the care of dementia patients; in addition to cooperation with other professional groups, the guidance of relatives will also be differentiated.
The aim is to be able to deal with special situations in a more professional manner and to identify alternative communication strategies in order to develop and apply person-centred and individualised solutions.

The ECTS acquired as part of the programme can be credited with up to 12 credit points towards the Applied Nursing Sciences degree programme, subject to academic or professional suitability and subject to re-accreditation.
