In collaboration with Hohrenk Systemtechnik GmbH from Cremlingen, bus and urban railway shelters are being equipped with self-sufficient irrigation technology and irrigation strategies for urban greenery are being tested.

The aim of the project is to equip 10 bus shelters with a water tank and IoT sensors in order to irrigate their own green roof, a tree or urban greenery in a demand-orientated and energy self-sufficient manner. With the completion of the first prototype and a test operation at the Hohrenk Systemtechnik GmbH depot in Cremlingen, the project has taken a decisive step towards achieving this goal.

A water tank, the pipework and pump technology as well as a control centre were installed in a third of the three-part rear wall of the bus shelter. The PV system, which provides a self-sufficient energy supply, is installed on the roof of the bus shelter.

The bus shelter locations in the neighbouring regions in the cities of Braunschweig, Helmstedt, Wolfsburg, Salzgitter and the district of Wolfenbüttel have been determined. Production and delivery of the other systems can now begin.

The SmartCity Irrigation project is being funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) as part of the federal model project "Unternehmen Revier". The project organiser is the district of Helmstedt. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Computer Science at Ostfalia HAW and Hohrenk Systemtechnik GmbH and will run until the end of 2026.
