Financing a stay abroad

A stay abroad is associated with increased costs. How high these costs are depends on several factors - for example, the destination country, the length of your stay and your choice of accommodation.

Most Ostfalia students do not pay tuition fees as part of an exchange programme at one of our partner universities. Only so-called "free movers", who organise their stay abroad individually outside of existing partnerships, must expect to pay tuition fees.

Regardless of whether you are going abroad as an exchange student or a free mover, it is important to keep a close eye on the cost of living in your host country. Depending on the country and region, these can differ significantly from the costs in Germany. Your personal lifestyle also plays a major role - depending on how you live, eat and organise your free time, your expenses may vary.

What specific expenses should you plan for?

- Cost of living (housing, food, leisure)

- Health insurance

- Flights and travelling expenses

- Visas and vaccinations if necessary

- Teaching materials

- Possibly tuition fees (for free movers)

How high the individual costs actually are depends heavily on the country, the university and your lifestyle. You can often find an initial overview on the website of your host university.
