Interview with Lisa (25) about her studies
Lisa made a conscious decision to study Mechanical Engineering and Management, which she successfully completed in 2019.
Hey Lisa, you worked part-time at our faculty as a research assistant at the Institute of Design and Applied Mechanical Engineering (IKAM for short) under the supervision of Prof Dr Falk Klinge in the wind tunnel. When you think back, what particularly memorable memories do you have from your studies with us?
The degree programme itself was full of experiences.
I remember one thing very clearly: after many weeks of lectures, the professor came into the lecture theatre one morning 30 minutes late. He told us that he had been desperately looking for us students. He had forgotten where our lecture was taking place and had therefore walked round all the rooms to find us.
However, as the academic quarter was already over, many of his fellow students had already left. He then wrote us an email to say that he couldn't make it to the lecture today and that it was therefore cancelled, even though he had been seen by a few people in the morning. He probably didn't want the students to know that he was desperately looking for the room.
A really funny story. Which professor it was exactly remains a secret ;-) ?!
Aerodynamic investigations, optical measurement technology with PIV, IPCT and BOS ... although theIndustrialEngineering and Management degree programme inMechanical Engineering does not have a specialisation, you were enthusiastic about design and development. How did that come about?
Yes, absolutely. If you're interested in a field that isn't taught, that doesn't mean you can't develop further in it. Ultimately, a degree programme should show you what you enjoy and where you can imagine working later on.
What is your Bachelor's thesisabout and how did you find a topic for it?
In my bachelor's thesis, I created a new nozzle for laser deposition welding. The special thing about this nozzle is that it is used in additive manufacturing and was also created using an additive manufacturing process.
What is your "personal favourite place" at the faculty?
I used to retreat to the basement corridors of the university to study. But my favourite place in summer was sitting outside in the sun in front of the cafeteria.
Just between you and me: what additional programmes at Ostfalia do you recommend students take advantage of?
Before I started my studies, I took part in the maths pre-course. The reason for this was that I had done an apprenticeship before starting my studies and so I was a few years out of the material. For me, it was very good for revision. But I did even more!
Among other things, I got my inland boating licence and plan to get my sailing licence in the next few years.
I took the social skills workshop with gliding in Laucha with Mr Klinge. An exciting experience! I also completed the KUKA Programming Licence 1 as part of a course. i was also the head of the All2gehter initiative for many years.
There was always a lot going on with you! What were your most important contact points at Ostfalia University in terms of counselling?
At the beginning of my studies, I went to the learning coaching centre a few times. I got good basic tips there to help me find my way around university life. Before I started my degree programme, I also went to the Ostfalia student advisory service and got information on site.
What personal tip do you have for students in their first semester?
Use everything you can to be well prepared!
Since mid-2019, you have also been part of Prof Dr Falk Klinge's academic team. We think it's great that you're staying with us despite continuing your studies at the Technical University. What are your current tasks and how does your degree help you in your work?
Thanks to my studies, I know a lot of tools, especially in the area of project planning, to organise the PM process in the best possible way.
I am currently not only responsible for the entire project planning of the wind tunnel, but also for personnel planning and all other things that arise, e.g. for public relations.
This is your opportunity to say a few words or a personal thank you to your colleagues:
I can't think of a better PLACE to do my Bachelor's degree. Because of my previous training, I was really worried that I wouldn't be able to keep up. Even though I took a little longer than others in maths, I was able to finish my degree in 8 semesters. The professors were always on hand with help and advice if I had any questions!
Thank you for the insight into your studies with us at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and your commitment at our graduation ceremonies! We wish you every success in your Master's programme at the Technical University of Braunschweig!
