Practical learning
Our goal: a close integration of theory and practice.
Practice right from the start
Our study concept provides for a practical phase during each semester. The content of each practical phase is linked to the modular focus and educational areas of the respective semester and is an integral part of the degree programme.
Students who have completed training as social education assistants start their work placement in the third semester.
Nursery teachers, curative education nurses or curative educators only complete the block placement in the fifth semester.
Childhood educators, social pedagogues or educators with several years of professional experience in the field of work take on the practical training. In accordance with Section 20 (3) SozHeilKindVO, the internships of the practical phase modules must be completed in a maximum of two child and youth welfare facilities that educate and raise children up to the age of ten (suitable facilities). In special cases, the internships can be completed in a third suitable organisation with the approval of the university.
How is the practical study period organised?
From the 1st to the 4th semester, a work placement totalling 150 hours must be completed. During the lecture period, students are at the practical training centre on a fixed day of the week. Outside of this time, you agree the days of work with your placement centre.
In the 5th semester, an internship of 480 hours is planned as a block internship. In the 6th and 7th semesters, a work placement of 150 hours each must be completed. The training content and objectives are set out in a training plan (external link, opens in a new window). Please read our regulations for the practical training period (external link, opens in a new window) in advance.
Do I need an internship contract?
For the primary qualifying study format, proof of an internship contract with an early childhood education, care and upbringing facility for children aged 0 to 10 years must be provided no later than four weeks after the start of the first semester (Section 20 (3) of the Lower Saxony SozHeilKindVO).
Social education assistants are exempt from this requirement. They start their internship in the 3rd semester and receive credit for the first two practical phases upon application.
Please use the sample contract with training plan (external link, opens in a new window) provided by the university. After you and your placement centre have signed the contract in triplicate, the contract documents must be sent to us for review and acknowledgement:
Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences - Braunschweig/Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences
Faculty of Health Care/ KPG Mrs Schink
Robert-Koch-Platz 8a
38440 Wolfsburg
You will then usually receive two signed copies of the contract by post from the work placement officer within 10 working days.
How do I find a work placement?
You are free to choose your work placement. We recommend that you contact potential work placements at an early stage and make a reservation. Possible fields of work include daycare centres, family centres, all-day primary schools, school social work, school kindergartens, early help or early intervention.
