Your way abroad
-
Selection of a target university
As a first step, think about which destination country and which partner university you would like to consider for a semester abroad. When making your choice, you should pay particular attention to the course programme offered and any language requirements.
The International Student Office (ISO) of Ostfalia offers a publisher (external link, opens in a new window) for your research, which contains an overview of all partner universities of our faculty as well as the underlying requirements for a semester abroad.
-
Planning your semester abroad
If you are interested in a semester abroad, we recommend planning this early on. Depending on the target university and exchange programme, a semester abroad can consist of attending courses, completing internships or writing academic papers. You should therefore consider early on how such a semester can fit into your study programme. We will be happy to support you in this phase.
-
Preparing for your semester abroad
Planning is followed by preparation for your stay abroad. If there are language requirements for your chosen destination university, we recommend taking a language course. At Ostfalia, the list of languages offered can be viewed at the Language Centre.
The ERASMUS+ programme offers scholarships for target universities in the European Union to finance a stay abroad. Information on this programme can be obtained from the International Student Office (external link, opens in a new window). Other funding options are sometimes offered for target universities outside Europe. Please contact us directly.
-
Application for a semester abroad
In principle, applications for a semester abroad are made in the first instance via the Faculty's Internationalisation Officer. Please send us a short letter of motivation (in English), your CV (in English) and a current transcript of records. The following deadlines apply:
- 15.02. for a stay abroad in the following winter semester
- 15.09. for a stay abroad in the following summer semester
Some target universities have special deadlines. Therefore, please contact us in good time to discuss any deviations from the above deadlines.
Semester abroad within the EU
We have various partner universities within the EU, including in the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal. The opportunity to complete a semester abroad at one of these universities is primarily available to Bachelor's students. You can find an overview of all partnerships on the website (external link, opens in a new window) of the International Student Office. Funding is supported by the ERASMUS+ programme. All information can be found on the International Student Office website.
Semester abroad outside the EU
Here we present specific programmes at our partner universities that are located outside the EU.
CDHAW double degree programme

The programme at the Chinese-German University of Applied Sciences (CDHAW) was launched in 2004 as a pilot project by the Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The sponsors of this binational university are Tongji University in Shanghai on the Chinese side and the German University Consortium for International Co-operation (DHIK) on the German side.
As part of the CDHAW programme, you can either complete a conventional semester abroad in Shanghai or obtain a double degree (Bachelor). After successfully completing one academic year at the CDHAW, consisting of a theoretical semester and a final thesis, you will receive a Chinese Bachelor's degree from Tongji University and a German Bachelor's degree from Ostfalia.
You can find all information about the programme and the application process in our fact sheet (PDF, 2.68 MB) (opens in a new window), (not accessible).
Semester abroad in Mexico
As part of our cooperation with the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP) in Mexico, you have the opportunity to attend English-language courses or write an academic paper. There is also a cooperation programme with Volkswagen Mexico, which opens the doors to a six-month internship including a scholarship.
In the experience report (PDF, 3.42 MB) (opens in a new window), (not accessible) of a student from our faculty, you will get first-hand impressions of studying and living in Puebla.
