Network for equal opportunities in higher education

We have set up the Network for Equal Opportunities in Studying to reduce the barriers that Ostfalia students experience when studying with chronic physical and/or mental impairments.

Equal opportunities means that students with or without disabilities are given a fair chance to succeed in their studies. But how do students, lecturers and staff at our university master this task? What does it take to give students with disabilities equal access to lifelong learning and higher education? How can we create a place of learning where people with different backgrounds and in different life situations can study together and benefit from this diversity?

We have already brought together many important perspectives at our digital kick-off event on 27 April 2022. And we want to keep working on the topic and give students a space to describe how they experience their studies. Where are the hurdles? What is going really well? And where are they already receiving helpful support? What ideas do they have for equal study opportunities? Together with personal and professional experts, we want to talk about this and develop ideas on how to make equal study opportunities possible, even with disabilities. And we want to network with each other and with contact persons so that students receive the support they deserve. Would you like to get involved and actively help shape change? Then get in touch with us.

We look forward to continuing our work.

Student initiative - Students for ChanGeS

Who are we?

We are a student working group consisting of five students (all social work), including students who themselves have a health impairment.

Why do we exist?

- Students with impairments and illnesses encounter barriers that make it difficult for them to study, resulting in them having to extend, interrupt or drop out of their studies

- Prospective students rule out studying in advance due to barriers and a lack of knowledge about, for example, compensation for disadvantages

- affected students repeatedly encounter prejudice and stigmatisation and often do not seek help for fear of this

- affected students are often unaware of the support options and contact points offered by the university, which is why they do not make use of them

What is our role and what do we want to achieve?

- Contact point for students and prospective students with impairments and illnesses

- Help students and prospective students with disabilities and illnesses with their questions and concerns or advise them and, if necessary, refer them to official contact points at Ostfalia

- Educating and sensitising lecturers, staff and students

- Developing ideas and working to remove barriers

- We also see ourselves as a contact point for students with other concerns or difficulties, such as language barriers or students with children, in order to refer them to official Ostfalia offices

How can we be contacted?
