Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences mourns the loss of Professor Gerd Winner. The internationally renowned painter and graphic artist from Liebenburg passed away on 8 April 2026 at the age of 89.
Born in Braunschweig, Winner was associated with our university for many years. Between 2001 and 2003, he created the "Tower of Technology" on the Salzdahlumer Straße campus in Wolfenbüttel. The twelve-metre-high stainless steel stele symbolises the technical and scientific foundations of engineering education and at the same time sets an urban accent. Over the years, the sculpture has become a landmark of Ostfalia and shows that the Wolfenbüttel engineering sciences of electrical engineering and information technology, computer science, mechanical engineering and supply engineering are an important part of our university. Students, staff and lecturers at Ostfalia will honour Gerd Winner's memory.
