More information about the language

Arabic is the most widespread Semitic language and is spoken by around 450 million people as a mother tongue and as a second or foreign language, making it the 5th most spoken language in the world.

The first Arabic inscriptions date back to the 9th century BC.

Classical Arabic developed in the middle of the 6th century A.D. The Koran as a holy scripture spread the language in the 7th/8th century as far as southern Europe in the north (Andalusia), Morocco in the west, Zanzibar (Tanzania) in the south and Central Asia (western China) in the east.

From the 20th century onwards, it is referred to as modern Arabic. In addition to the modern standard language, different regional dialects were used, which functioned as colloquial languages.
