What would a generous society look like? The Utopia Conference 2026 explores democratic generosity at a time when everything seems to be working against it. What becomes possible when people give more, take more risks and leave more open than is financially viable? And what if a society were to base its rules on this?

For the fifth Utopia Conference at Leuphana University, under the patronage of Maja Göpel, Barbara Bleisch, Aladin El-Mafaalani and Wolfgang M. Schmitt, a new format called ‘Funken’ was introduced. In their ‘Funken’, conference participants offered ideas relating to the conference theme.

The Faculty of Health Sciences was represented in the ‘Funken’ by Mareike Bröcking and Kyra Jantzen. In their workshop ‘Exploring child-centred urban planning with LEGO® Serious Play®’, participants had the opportunity to ask themselves the following questions: For whom are we currently designing our cities? What might a public space look like that was designed primarily to meet the needs of children? How would our everyday lives change as a result of such a public space? As well as having the chance to give shape to these questions using the LEGO® Serious Play® method, participants were also able to view LEGO® models of a city for children – developed by children themselves – and engage in conversation with the workshop leaders.
