This commemorative volume demonstrates that a quarter of a century of academic work stands for scholarly continuity, a commitment to further developing the subject matter, and a consistently European and international orientation, which has been an integral part of the Faculty’s identity from the very beginning.
The more than 35 contributions in this volume are by established academics, early-career researchers and long-standing associates of BELS from Germany and abroad, including beyond Europe. The commemorative volume is thus not only an expression of academic excellence, but also a visible sign of a well-established network of professional collaboration and personal ties that has accompanied the development of BELS over many years.
In terms of content, the volume reflects key transformative processes currently shaping law, the economy and society. This serves to further define Ostfalia’s profile.
A first thematic section is devoted to the transformation of the world of work and labour law in the context of digitalisation, changing organisational forms and new requirements regarding health and safety and employee participation.
Another focus lies on the legal and social challenges posed by digitalisation and artificial intelligence. The contributions take a cross-disciplinary approach to examining how technical innovations are altering existing structures in commercial, administrative, constitutional and education law, and what implications this has for regulation, accountability and the rule of law.
Issues relating to company, insolvency and commercial law form a third thematic area. The focus here is on organisational responsibility, liability structures, creditor protection and new legal concepts in the context of sustainability and global value chains.
Tax and financial law is examined in a fourth section, focusing on its European and international dimensions. Global minimum taxation, digital business models and new forms of economic activity illustrate the dynamism of a field of law that is particularly influenced by globalisation and digitalisation.
A concluding section offers interdisciplinary perspectives on sustainability, social behaviour, psychological factors and issues relating to university teaching. It emphasises that legal developments are always embedded in broader social, environmental and cultural contexts.
All the contributions share a high standard of academic rigour. Since its foundation, the BELS has been committed to research that combines doctrinal precision with openness to new developments and seeks dialogue across subject, national and disciplinary boundaries. This commemorative volume exemplifies this commitment.
At the same time, this volume is an expression of gratitude towards the many colleagues, partner institutions, sponsors and friends who have accompanied and supported BELS over the past 25 years. This deepening bond is both a source of joy and a commitment – a commitment to continue prioritising cooperation, international perspectives and vibrant scholarly exchange in the future.
