Ringvorlesung Nachhaltigkeit am 26.11.2025: November-Special zum Thema „Green IT - Chancen und Risiken im KI-Zeitalter“ - mit Prof. Dr. Dr. Nils Jensen, Prof. Dr. Dirk Hohm und Lisa Vieweg (Google DACH).

The Sustainability Lecture Series is offering a special treat for all interested parties on 26 November 2025 at 5:30 pm in the Ostfalia University auditorium. Three high-calibre speakers from science and practice will present their views on the topic of green IT on this evening.

In his introductory lecture "A computer science perspective on green IT and AI",Professor Dr Nils Jensen will point out the conflicting goals between the sustainable and resource-saving use of IT and the increasing resource consumption of artificial intelligence (AI). "Green IT should be a building block for achieving the Paris climate target of no more than 1.5 degrees of global warming, which has almost become unattainable. At the same time, the actually welcome improvements in AI models in recent years have shown that their large-scale use could lead to a threefold increase in resource requirements," says Nils Jensen, summarising the conflict vividly.

Professor Dr Dirk Hohm 's presentation entitled "Sustainable and fair marketing in the age of AI" will explore the question of whether the use of AI can be used to create future-proof, fair and sustainable marketing. Dirk Hohm emphasises the opportunities and risks of AI in marketing: "The advancing digitalisation of marketing and the promises of artificial intelligence open up new potential solutions, but also exacerbate the problems, e.g. through massively increased electricity consumption".

Lisa Vieweg from Google DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) explains in her lecture "How can AI support sustainability?" the potential of AI to reduce the carbon footprint using the example of online advertising. Based on practical use cases at Google, the challenges and opportunities associated with the use of AI will be examined in detail.

The NachOs project is looking forward to a lively participation of interested parties in the auditorium and exciting discussions.

This event is part of the lecture series on sustainability "Discover your future spirit".
