Your appeal procedure
The selection for an HAW professorship, the appointment procedure, can take over a year. Various people and committees are involved, both within and outside the university, from the appointment committee and the faculty council to the senate and presidium and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. You need perseverance until the selection has been finalised by all relevant committees.
Even if this process seems disproportionately long compared to the selection procedures you may be familiar with from the business world - it's worth it!
Step 1 - the formal selection
After the application deadline, the committee responsible for the appointment procedure meets. the appointment committee evaluates each application with regard to possible fulfilment of the required selection criteria and then justifies the positive or negative selection of all applicants.
Step 2 - the interview (trial teaching event & job interview)
If you are selected as an applicant in the first stage, you will receive an invitation to a so-called hearing, which usually consists of a trial course (usually 45 minutes) and a subsequent interview.
During your trial teaching session, show us that you can teach the topic set by the committee at university level, in particular how you involve students, and convince us of your pedagogical and didactic aptitude. During the interview, we would like to get to know you personally, discuss specialist issues with you and respond to your questions.
Step 3 - The appointment proposal
Once all the hearings have been completed, the appointment committee draws up and justifies an appointment proposal (list), which, if necessary after obtaining expert opinions, is approved by the subsequent committees (Faculty Council, Senate and Presidential Board) and submitted to the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony for the appointment decision.
Step 4 - The appointment hearing & acceptance of appointment
The Ministry examines the appointment proposal and grants the appointment. As part of the appointment negotiations with the President, remuneration and equipment are discussed. If you accept the appointment, we will usually check whether you can be made a civil servant (result of a medical examination and certificate of good conduct). Otherwise, we will be happy to employ you on a permanent basis.
In both cases there is no probationary period. Depending on the agreement reached in the appointment negotiations, employment will usually take place at the beginning of a new semester.
Welcome as a new professor at Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences.
