Recruitment requirements for a professorship

How to become a professor is regulated differently in each federal state according to the requirements of the higher education laws. In addition to the specific subject requirements for the respective position, you must also observe the general requirements of the Lower Saxony State Higher Education Act for a professorship at Ostfalia.

The basic requirements

Completed university degree
The formal requirements stipulated by the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act include a university degree. The job advertisement usually specifies which specialisation is mandatory, desirable or ideal.

Previous pedagogical and didactic experience and aptitude
This includes practical teaching experience. You will acquire such experience, for example, by working as a research assistant with teaching duties, through teaching assignments, as a deputy professor or through other teaching activities in the form of further training or lectures. The job advertisement usually specifies that teaching experience with students is either mandatory or desired.

Special aptitude for in-depth independent academic work
Special aptitude for in-depth independent academic work is usually demonstrated by an above-average doctorate.

Special achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in the advertised teaching field in at least five years of professional practice, three years of which must be outside the university sector
You must prove that you have made special achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in the context of relevant professional experience (at least five years in total, of which at least three years outside the university sector).
